Saint Bon Chapel

First mentioned in 1299, it was wrecked by the Bernese in 1589 before being rebuilt in 1615 in the exact location of Saint François de Sales’ first miracle which was to resurrect a dead unbaptised child.

In 1426, Amédée VIII entrusted the service to the monks of Ripaille and, in 1431, he bought property adjacent to the fortress of Thonon and made a street, now disappeared (rue Saint-Bon), which touches the chapel and goes towards the current rue Chante-Coq.

The old cemetery of the city was used from this date until the beginning of the 20th century, before it was transferred to the place called Champagne. An inscription engraved above the door of the chapel reminds us of this: "O you who pass by here, pray to God for the dead".

Partially destroyed by the Bernese invaders in 1589, the chapel remained abandoned until 1615, when it was taken over by the Reverend Pierre Bouverat, priest of the Holy House. On July 9, 1617, François de Sales, bishop of Geneva, consecrated the chapel under the vocation of the Assumption of Mary.

Not far from the chapel, the retaining wall of the square bears an enamelled plaque evoking the resurrection of a child who died without baptism, the son of a Calvinist woman, the first miracle performed by Saint-François de Sales during his mission in the Chablais region.

The Saint-Bon chapel lost its bell tower during the revolutionary period, razed by the conventionnel Albitte in 1794.
