This medieval fortress was owned by the Seigneurs de Duin for several centuries, then by the family of Marquis François de Sales, before becoming a residential château. The château, terraces and landing stage have been listed as historic monuments.
A second medieval château completes the geostrategic position imposed by the Lords. They were built in a highly strategic location, at the narrowest point of the lake, the glacial lock.
The Châteauvieux was used to keep an eye on the lake's comings and goings, and to secure a right of passage across the lake!
The Château du Roc, of which only a "ruined" tower remains today, dominated the only access route between Annecy and Conflans (Albertville). Every traveller had to pay a few coins or foodstuffs at the land toll!
The village of Duingt boasts a third castle! The more recent Hérée Renaissance château.
None of these castles can be visited.

Château de Duingt, on the peninsula, is literally in the heart of Lake Annecy. Built in the 13th century, Châteauvieux was originally built on an island and underwent several modifications up to the 18th century.
