After the storming of the Bastille in 1789, citizen Palloy, a contractor, was in charge of the demolition of the famous building.
He sold or offered to the cities of France the stones of the fortress thrown down as souvenirs of the Revolution.
Palloy also sent to each capital of the newly created departments a model of the Bastille carved in a stone from the demolition. Two hundred years later, a similar phenomenon occurred with the sections of the Berlin Wall.
In September 1792, after the entry of the French troops in Savoy, Palloy offered one of these stones to the city of Thonon.
Hidden after the Restoration of 1815 and the return of the Kings of Piedmont-Sardinia, it was found, very damaged, in the garden of the Marcoz family, in Les Ursules, before being inserted in the old wall of the castle of Thonon.
