On June 17, 1944, the Secret Army and the Francs-Tireurs Partisans Français formed a headquarters for the Forces Françaises de l'Intérieur (FFI). They met at Montremont (Thônes) to coordinate their actions and improve their response capabilities to the parachute drop announced for August on the Glières plateau. They put in place the plan to liberate the department.
The fighting began in earnest with the big parachute drop on August 1, 1944 at Les Glières.
On August 6, 1944, the Haute-Savoie Resistance organized for the final battle. To warn the population, a leaflet "La libération du pays approche" (The liberation of the country is approaching) was sent out throughout the département.
August 12 1944 marked the start of operations for the Liberation battles. Fighting for the liberation of towns and villages began on August 15, 1944; the maquisards liberated Chamonix, Megève, Le Fayet, Evian and Sallanches, and fought hard to free Thonon and Cluses.
On August 17, the town of Thonon-les-Bains was liberated at the cost of 17 Resistance fighters killed.
On Saturday August 19, 1944, Haute-Savoie became the first department in France to be liberated on its own, in the middle of a German-occupied zone.
FFI fighters then continued the battle in Savoie and Ain.
