Church of St. Martin

This church was rebuilt in its entirety between 1698 and 1702. Three centuries later, its Baroque interior was restored to its bright and colourful glory thanks to the paintbrush of Daniel Venjean, an artist from the valley.

About

Les Allues (73550)

When you enter, look up to see the décor realised in the 19th century by the Artari brothers, painters from Val d'Aoste, on the vaults of the central nave.
However, your gaze will quickly be drawn to the chancel and the high altar, carved by Jacques Antoine Todesco, "master sculptor to the Duchy of Milan and residing in Moustier", in 1677, with the gilded tabernacle in the centre. Above it, the central painting, framed by coloured twisted columns, represents the Virgin with the patron saint of the parish and two martyrs: St. Suzanne and St. Mamert.
Since the 19th century, six trompe-l'œil paintings have decorated the lateral walls of the chancel, and the tribune features a collection of processional lanterns, crosses and staffs attached to its balustrade.
Do not forget to greet the statue of St. Martin on horseback under the tribune; it was restored in 1997 and formerly stood in pride of place above the entry gate.
