From Col de la Croix de Fer, a loop route really recommended, follow "Les Bancs / Col nord des Lacs" (east face of Les Perrons, on the Saint Sorlin d'Arves side). Go up to the Col Nord des Lacs by the old mountain pasture path (which avoids the ski slope altogether).
At the Col Nord des Lacs either go down to the Bramant lake (1st lake) and the Etendard refuge (food, drinks...) or go directly to the Blanc lake (2nd lake) then to the Tournant lake (3rd lake) and finally to the foot of the glacier. For the return, in a loop, via the refuge follow "Col des Tufs" and then take the track back to the Col de la Croix de Fer.
Caution: from the Col Nord des Lacs or from the refuge it takes another 2 hours to reach the foot of the glacier (+ time to return to the Col de la Croix de Fer, i.e. 4 hours) - Do not progress on the glacier (abrasive ice, snow bridges on crevasses...).
