In previous centuries, pilgrims flocked here from all over Maurienne and even neighbouring Dauphiné to worship the Virgin who was deemed to work miracles. Legend has it that she was able to return still-born children, presented to her, to life for a short while - just time enough to perform a final baptism! The painted scene to the right of the chancel probably depicts this unusual act of worship for which the site - known as a "sanctuaire à répit" (respite sanctuary) - became famous.
Amongst the sanctuary's many impressive, decorative elements, the heavenly trompe l'oeil vista that adorns the central dome is alone worth the visit!
