From the Bouquetin parking lot, walk to the village-hamlet of Le Plan via Pont du Vâ Bridge. Cross the village on a lovely narrow cobblestone road with a fountain. At the very end, the hike officially starts on a forest road (trail no. 70).
Starting at the 1515m elevation mark, the trail ascends along the left side of the forest road. It takes the gully referred to as “Creux de l’Ours.” The word “ours” means “bear” in French; the last remaining bears in the area disappeared at the beginning of the 20th century.
On the upper section, you will cross through an open area filled with heather, alpenrose flowers, European blueberries, mountain cranberries, and bog blueberries. A local population of rock partridges calls the area home.
Once you reach Plan de la Roche, the mountain environment all around you is breathtaking, with the limestone cliffs of Aiguille de Mey and Aiguille d’Août spires on one side, often referred to as the little Dolomites for their vertical walls, and the Vanoise Glaciers on the other, the largest glacial ice cap in the Alps.
Please note: this hike should only be done out and back (go down the same way you hike up) given the ever-present risk of rock fall.
With the very real risk of a large rock slide, the trail between Col de Napremont Pass and Chollière is prohibited and closed to the public per a local ordinance passed on June 24, 2008.
