The film The Judge and the Assassin is a historical drama film inspired by real events that occurred in the last decades of the 19th century.

In 1893, Joseph Bouvier (played by Michel Galabru), a former infantry sergeant discharged because of his violent outbursts, shoots his daughter whom he wishes to marry, before turning his gun on himself. She survives and so does he, despite the two bullets lodged in her head. a simple and exalted spirit, nourished by anarchist slogans, he became a vagrant following his release from the asylum where his gesture had led him. From then on, traveling through rural France on foot, from the garrigues of the south to the mountains of the Ardèche via the Alps, he slaughtered and raped young shepherds or shepherdesses on his way. Taking an interest in this case, a provincial judge, Emile Rousseau (played by Philippe Noiret) patiently followed Bouvier. Once the assassin arrives in his area, he obtains his arrest on the basis of a report. If Bouvier thinks that we are going to treat him, Emile Rousseau, out of ambition, tries hard not to believe in his madness. Seeing in this case the unique opportunity for a promotion that could lead him to Paris, he then establishes a relationship of trust with Bouvier, the basis of an oiled mechanism to obtain a confession...

Le Juge et l'Assassin released in theaters in 1976 is the third film by Bertrand Tavernier and offers a sumptuous cast with Philippe Noiret in the title roles as an ambitious provincial bourgeois and a Michel Galabru in a performance that goes against his usual roles and which will earn him the César for best actor in 1977. The rest of the cast is made up of Jean-Claude Brialy, Jean-Roger Caussimon, Yves Robert and the very young Gérard Jugnot, Daniel Russo and Isabelle Huppert, all to music by Philippe Sarde.
