"What strikes you when you find yourself in Descombin's presence is that silence suddenly becomes something you perceive, something you hear." Charles Juliet
Born in Le Pulley in Saöne-et-Loire on 5 December 1909, Maxime Descombin was a self-taught man: a stone cutter, an ornamentalist in the building trade and the funeral industry, a seasonal practitioner in the service of Désiré Mathivet (when he met Antoine de Saint-Exupéry)... His work ranged from furniture to monumental works, including tapestries, decorations and costumes for the opera, and reliefs animated by coloured glass slabs. The quest he pursued in the solitude of Champlevert until his death led him to manifest the universality of the sign, the sound of the universe in the human, beyond the human.
