The living nativity scene in Bessans, an unmissable event in Haute Maurienne, offers you a life-size nativity scene that brings the local legend back to life: Jesus was born in Bessans!
Each year, more than 50 volunteer extras, dressed in traditional costumes, bring the birth of Jesus to life, accompanying him with old Bessanese Christmas carols in patois (written from 1650) and texts in French.
The performance in the heart of the village begins as soon as the church bell rings 6 p.m.
Angels then advance on a path lit by candles.
Residents of Bessans and the surrounding hamlets, dressed in traditional costumes, arrive. They come, in small groups, to pay homage to the newborn, their arms laden with gifts: tommes, polenta, lamb ...
In the cave dug in the snow, Mary and Joseph are there, surrounded by the ox, the donkey, the sheep, the goat and the shepherd ...
Believer or not, the magic of Christmas operates!
