1900 - Captain Clerc arrived at the Briançon Alpine Infantry Regiment, with his skis in his bags. This is when the great skiing adventure first began in France. The first international competition, organised by the army and the Club Alpin Français, took place in 1907 in Montgenèvre. The following year, it was held in Chamonix. The Railway Company of Paris to Lyon and the Mediterranean passed through Chamonix at the time, and so Chamonix was chosen to host the first Winter Olympic Games in 1924. This was also when the resort of Megève was built, upon the initiative of Baronne Noémie de Rothschild. From 1937, some great names in the French world of skiing were discovered, including Emile Allais, Charles Bozon, Christine and Marielle Goitschel, Adrien and Henri Duvillard, Jean-Claude Killy, and Guy Perillat.
Skiing started off as a sport reserved for the elite but it then became more and more accessible thanks to the ski lifts introduced in the Alps by young engineer Jean Pomagalski on the slopes of Alpe d'Huez. At the same time, the 'ideal resort' of Courchevel was designed by Laurent Chappis and Maurice Michaud, with innovative urban planning and architecture. The Albertville Olympic Games in 1992 kicked off a new era in the world of skiing, a more modern time with increased freedom (particularly with the addition of acrobatic skiing as an Olympic sport).
