Haute Maurienne, a technological testing ground in the 19th century

In the 19th century, the Italian engineer Tommaso Agudio designed a funicular system nicknamed "Agudio's noise" from Lanslebourg to Mont Cenis. But with the drilling of the Fréjus railway tunnel in 1871, the installation was almost never used.

The Agudio company (now Leitner), founded in 1861 by Tommaso Agudio, specialized in funiculars and cable cars. In 1870 the Italian engineer designed a first funicular on the slopes of Mont Cenis that the people of Lanslebourg nicknamed "the din of Agudio" because of the deafening noise of its operation. Unfortunately, the system almost never worked because of the boring of the Fréjus railway tunnel and in 1877 it was dismantled to be transported near Turin to undertake the access work to the historic basilica on the Superga hill.
