European Heritage Days - Saint Eustache chapel in Villaroland

Like all the larger villages and hamlets, Villaroland has its own chapel. Frescoes dating from the start of the 13th century tell of the life of Saint Eustache. You can see the interior of the chapel through a grid.

The exact date of construction of the chapel in Villaroland is not known. Edmond Brocard puts it at the end of the 12th century, Abbot Gontharet in the 14th.

It does indeed have the characteristic architectural features of Romanesque art: a single nave with a broken barrel vault, and an apse with a barrel vault like the chapel of Saint Pierre d'Extravache or the chapel of l'Écot near Bonneval-sur-Arc in the Maurienne. However, these elements do not allow us to give a precise date and, without a precise date which would allow is to describe it as a "Romanesque chapel", we will simply say that it is in the "Romanesque tradition".
