A "windy" history of Geneva's scientific expeditions
at the end of the eighteenth century

Towards the end of the 18th century, scientific expeditions to the Alps multiplied with the objective of documenting the long history of the Earth and the physics of the atmosphere. Armed with instruments of all kinds, scientists surveyed the mountains to measure them and produce representations, both textual and visual, which would later allow them to be domesticated. A historical perspective on the expeditions conducted on the slopes of Mont Buet by Genevan scientists at the end of the 18th century allows us to understand the mechanisms that transformed a living environment into an abstract space. In return, the understanding of these mechanisms makes it possible to become aware of all that has been eroded and to give flesh to what resists measurement.
