The architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc is best known for his heritage restoration work in the 19th century. This leading figure in French architecture was also a mountain enthusiast, convinced that exploration and knowledge of nature were essential to the creation of human works. Towards the end of his life, he was a regular visitor to Mont Blanc to decipher the workings of this natural monument. Historian Bérénice Gaussuin looks back at ‘Viollet-le-Duc's mountain’ and puts into perspective what this work tells us about our present and past relationships with the world around us.
