From the 11th century, the House of Savoy started to acquire its first possessions outside the initial County of Savoy around Le Bourget lake (from Bugey to the region of Chambéry), along the way of the Gauls going through the Val d'Aoste and the Tarentaise, even if the Maurienne way (Col du Mont Cenis) had been used more and more since the Carolingian dynasty.
The aim here is to explain what the name of "doorkeeper of the Alps" really meant by placing our Savoyard (and Tarentaise) region in the centre of Europe.
