The Combe de Caron run at Val Thorens

The run starts at the top of the Cime de Caron, from where you can soak up one of Europe's most stunning views. The panorama encompasses more than a thousand summits of the French, Italian and Swiss Alps, including Mont Blanc, Mont Brequin, the Péclet Glacier, the Meije and the Aiguilles d'Arves.

Altitude: 3,200m

Access: Cime de Caron gondola. Pedestrians can also enjoy the view from the top of the gondola (round-trip rate adult: €11.50, child: €8.50)

Difficulty: black or red

That little extra: the Cîme de Caron is one of the first summits in the resort to see the morning sun making a break on the superbly panoramic terrace of the Etape 3200 restaurant an even more enticing proposition... ...but don't forget the sun cream!

The Aiguille du Midi in Chamonix

The most beautiful summit in the Mont Blanc Massif is easily accessible from the centre of Chamonix by the most spectacular cable car in the Alps. With sensational views of the French, Italian and Swiss Alps, and just a stone's throw from Mont Blanc, who could ask for more?

Altitude: 3,842m

Access: top station of the Aiguille du Midi cable car

Difficulty: dependent on weather conditions: ask before going up.

That little extra: hire a mountain guide and ski the Vallée Blanche - an exacting descent over a highly crevassed glacier.

Altitude: 3,400m

Access: via the Funitigne and the Grande Motte cable car to the glacier.

Difficulty: dependent on weather conditions

That little extra: descend the Grande Motte Glacier: a superb, marked run with high altitude snow of exceptional quality.
