Snowshoeing

A winter sport for all

Savoie and Haute-Savoie offer lovers of wide-open spaces unlimited opportunities to explore the winter environment.

An ideal way of discovering the mountains

Snowshoeing is no more difficult than hiking in summer.

It is the second most popular winter sport in Savoie-Mont Blanc.

As a cheap and convivial way of enjoying the outdoors, it is a perfect way of getting away from it all and of admiring the region's forests, pastures, snow-draped plateaux and majestic peaks.

As for other winter sports, there are competitions throughout the season. A snowshoeing open day is held every January.

Equipment

  • Snowshoes and ski poles
[+ more info] in French only
  • Waterproof walking boots that hold the foot well,
  • Warm and comfortable clothes that wick away sweat and that allow the skin to breath,
  • Gloves, hat, sunglasses and sun cream.

The equipment used will depend on your size and weight, as well as on the type of snowshoeing you want to do: easy stroll, longer walk, high-mountain hike. Whatever you are looking for, retailers, rental outlets, walking guides and mountain guides will be able to provide you with advice.

Snowshoeing areas

Most of the resorts in Savoie Mont Blanc, as well as Savoie and Haute-Savoie's Nordic ski areas, have set up sign-posted snowshoeing itineraries.
Plans are available from tourist offices or from Nordic ski area reception desks.

If you are looking to get off the beaten track, there is no better way of discovering the mountain environment than with a professional walking guide.
Snowshoeing is the ideal activity for small groups, families or groups of friends.

Full-day, half-day, night-time and multi-day outings are available.
