Free flying requires skill and experience, especially in mountain areas, where the jagged relief can generate unusual and unpredictable air currents. Newcomers to flying in the Alps should seek professional advice and instruction.
Information can be obtained from the "Comités de vol libre" for Savoie and Haute-Savoie, clubs, and FFVL-approved free-flying schools, etc.
The prominent relief and geographical position of Savoie and Haute-Savoie generate unusual and sometimes unpredictable air conditions.
It is essential to check the weather forecast before flying, and discussions with local pilots can provide precious information about the aerology of the area you want to fly in.

Do not hesitate to call 112 if you are forced to land away from your intended landing zone, even if only to prevent the rescue services being called out unnecessarily by well-intentioned onlookers. State where and when you landed, and the colour of your wing. More than half of emergency call outs are false alerts!

As well as being a rural area with plains, valleys and mountains, Savoie Mont Blanc has many protected areas, including several nature reserves, two regional parks and a national park. Pilots must respect the regulations governing flying in these areas and find out about possible landing areas.
Some minimum heights for over-flying Savoie and Haute-Savoie's nature reserves and parks:
- Grande Sassière: 1000 m.
- Vanoise National Park: 1000 m.
- Massif des Bauges Regional Park: 300 m.
- "Bout du lac" wetlands on Lake Annecy: 200 m.
- Passy: 300 m.
- Contamines-Montjoie: 300 m.
- Sixt - Passy: 300 m.
- Aiguilles Rouges: 1000 m.
- Bargy bearded vulture protection area: 300 m.
