Massif du Mont Blanc

A Mecca for mountain lovers

The Massif du Mont Blanc in the east of our region, where France, Switzerland and Italy meet, is a Mecca for mountain lovers from across the globe.

Awe-inspiring Mont Blanc itself, the highest peak in Western Europe at c.4808 metres (15,774 feet), towers so much higher than the surrounding summits that it stands out startlingly from viewpoints right across Savoie.

Adventurous types should contact the renowned Compagnie des Guides in Chamonix  to organize a mountaineering trip to the top. You don't have to be a mountaineer or experienced walkers to get up close to Mont Blanc. Two mountain trains offer unforgettable, easy journeys up to great glaciers, the Tramway du Mont-Blanc going from St-Gervais and the Train du Montenvers from Chamonix.

Cable-car rides are a further safe, exhilarating option. Incidentally, cable cars not just around Mont Blanc, but all across the region are now open summer as well as winter, helping you to reach high terrain with ease.
